Surfboards FAQ

To help you choose the right directional, we already answered the most frequently asked questions.

What kind of kite surfboard are there and how do I choose the right one?

Kitesurf boards exist in many different shapes and models. Your perfect kite surfboard depends on your level, riding style and homespot. In the beginning it helps to go for a more stable directional. A surfboard with a wider front and nose, for example a nose less model, is really stable and easy to ride. Those directionals which are better for beginners, are also the ones which are best for small waves and lighter wind.

If you are looking for more performance, you can better choose a board with a pointy nose. This shape offers more maneuverability and creates more speed. These boards are better in bigger waves, but also harder to ride and less stable. The tail of the boards are also really important. Wider tails are more stable, but also make the board turn slower. If you are looking for a good strapless freestyle board, you’ll need to go for a fast board with a flat rocker line and a stubby nose and wide tail for easy landings.

Which size directional do I need?

The size of your board also depends on your body weight and the conditions in which you usually ride. If you are heavier, you will need a bigger board with more volume. In stronger wind you can ride a smaller board. If you ride a lot in smaller waves, you can better choose a smaller board which is a lot more agile. In bigger waves, however, you’ll need a bigger board to keep up with the speed of the waves for down the line surfing.

Do I need a footstrap on my waveboard?

Putting a footstrap on your board is personal preference, but it makes learning to ride a surfboard a lot easier. The waterstart is easier and also learning to do proper gybes and turns on the wave. You will also have less chance of loosing your board when you have your front foot in the strap. It is important to check if the board that you want comes with inserts, because not all kite surfboards come with strap inserts.

Are kitesurf boards the same as traditional surfboards?

No, there is a lot more force on the kitesurfing boards kitesurf boards, so they are a lot stronger built than traditional surfboards. Kitesurf boards also need less volume, since the kite is generating speed.
