Wingboards FAQ

Are you not sure which wing board to buy? We answered some of the most frequently asked questions to help you choose the perfect wingboard.

What is a good beginners wing board?

A good beginners board is big and has a lot of volume. The right beginner board will make a huge difference in learning to wing. The bigger the board and the more volume the wingboard has, the easier it will be to learn how to wing.

What size wing board should I choose?

Overall, volume is your friend! A bigger board with a lot of volume will make learning to wingfoil a lot easier, and will also make learning maneuvers a lot easier. When you are just starting wingsurfing we recommend to add 30L to 40L to your bodyweight. This will mean that when you are 80kg, you will start on a board from around 120L. When you are progressing you can change to a smaller board. But having slightly more volume will always help during the learning process, for example when you’re learning the tacks and gybes. Smaller wing boards are a lot more maneuverable and more playful, which is why a compact shape is a really good option for the more advanced wingers.

With or without footstraps?

When you are learning to wingfoil it is better to start without footstraps. In the beginning it is better not to be attached to the board to avoid injuries. Footstraps can make wingfoiling a lot easier once you are able to comfortable ride up and down. Pumping and making turns is a lot easier with footstraps. That’s why we do recommend to buy a board with strap inserts for wingfoiling.

Do I need a board leash for wingsurfing?

For wingfoiling you definitely need a board leash. When you fall off your board and the wind is strong it is really hard and sometimes impossible to get back to your board swimming. At Matos we sell different models ankle and waist leashes for wingfoil boards.
