Wingfoils FAQ

Are you not sure which wing hydrofoil to buy? We answered some of the most frequently asked questions to help you choose the perfect wing hydrofoil.

What is a good beginners wing foil?

A good beginners foil is big and low aspect. The right beginner foil will make a huge difference in learning to wing. A bigger the foil with a lower aspect ratio is a lot more stable and will foil at low speed. This will help throughout the whole learning curve of learning to ride until learning to gybe and tack.

What size foil should I choose?

The right size foil depends on your level, weight and on the shape of the foil. When you are learning to wingfoil it is better to start with a bigger foil, for example an 1800. The aspect ratio is as important for the amount of lift a foil generates as the size. Foils with a higher aspect ratio give more lift so can be ridden in smaller sizes. Advanced foilers can go for a foil around 800 or 1000 from for example Lift or the H-series foils from Cabrinha.

What size mast should is the best for wingfoiling?

When you are learning to wingfoil it is better to start on a slightly shorter mast. With a shorter mast you can start closer to the beach and you will crash less hard. A mast around 60cm is a really good size to start with. Once you are more advanced you can decide to change to a longer mast. A longer mast is better to pump and a lot better in waves.

What is the difference between high and low aspect foils?

The shape of the foil makes a huge difference. A low aspect foil is broad and is more stable. A low aspect foil flies with low speed which makes it the perfect option for people who are just getting started with wingfoiling. A high aspect foil is narrow, which makes it more efficient and easier to pump. Since the high aspect foils are more efficient you can ride smaller sizes. Higher aspect foils are slightly harder to ride because you need more speed to get up on the foil and they're slightly harder to turn.
